 HMS BERMUDA 1945
Completing her refit as peace is achieved in Europe the ship leaves for Pacific war operations little knowing that peace would soon come there too adding the liberation of Allied prisoners of war to the ship's tasks.

Long Refit on Clydebank continued through the first three months of 1945 with a gradual increase of numbers in the ship's company.

APRIL 1945

As April began the 'heartbeat' of the ship was increasing with more and more people, stores and equipment being taken aboard. The forecast Refit Completion Date that had previously been fluid was now solidly fixed and rapidly approaching. There was everything to do now from running machinery to testing equipments, facilities and familiarities within the modernised ship. Visually the most significant change had been the removal of 'X' turret.  Now, as long as no major defects came to light the temporary, but for wartime lengthy, nine-month association with the Clyde and Glasgow was about to end.

Weihsein Internees

The following extracts are from Captain Bethell's (CO HMS Bermuda) 'Diary of Events' at Tsingtao, China in September/October 1945.

"19th September 1945.

0900 Proceeded (from Shanghai) in HMS "Bermuda" with HMS "Tuscan" in company in accordance with C.T.G 112.3's 181620/Sept."

"20th September 1945.

1500 Anchored in Tsingtao roads, 11/2 Miles SW Yunuisan Light.

…The city is in an extremely dirty and insanitary condition.
…There are a number of foreign residents at liberty estimated at:
Germans - 1200, Japanese 30,000. also a fair number of White Russians
"The behaviour of the Japanese soldiers and sailors appears quiet and satisfactory. They are reported to be very badly off and even resorting to selling their swords.

"1700. The Captain proceeded ashore with Adm Settle (USN Commander Task Gp 71.4 in USS Louisville and Senior Officer (Allies)) and Captain Erck (USS New Orleans) to the Admiral's Office in Edgewater Hotel to contact Colonel Weinberg who is the U.S. Army Officer in charge of the internee camp and supply and evacuation arrangements.

Internee Situation

There are about 1500 internees at Weishein (sic) about 100 miles inland. There are men, women and children but no Prisoners of War. All are reported to be in good health and reasonably comfortable. U.S Air Force has dropped 125 tons of food etc., and "Bermuda's" offers of medical stores have been politely refused.

Arrangements for evacuating them appear obscure and the A.P.A expected for the 24th, September has apparently been postponed. This appears unfortunate as there is not supposed to be sufficient accommodation in the city to house the whole 1500, while the railway is unreliable and liable to damage by bandits."

"Friday, 21st, September 1945

…Admiral Settle, Captain Erck and Captain Bethell called on Rear Admiral Sheh (Chinese Navy). The latter expressed especial delight at the arrival of the White Ensign (he had served in HMS Hibernia in 1908 and RNC Greenwich and was very proud of his RN association and training) …and stated he was waiting for General Lee Yen Yen to come and take over the official surrender of the city.

He had, or could give, no idea of this date but it would not be until the General had first received the surrender of Tainan, the capital of Shantung.
He stated that he had enough sailors under arms to maintain order in the city and harbour, but was worried that the Communists might invest (sic) and sack the city, in which case he had insufficient force to prevent it."

"Sunday, 23rd, September 1945

AM and PM - Investigated the possibility of extra accommodation in the town for all the internees, the Captain and Captain Erck U.S.N. drove round the town and several possibilities were explored.

…Full arrangements for reception of RAPWI (Returning Allied Prisoners of War and Internees), tomorrow, Monday, were effected. The Captain was further convinced that the presence of a British cruiser in a good position in the Inner Harbour was having a quietening effect on the local situation.
Chinese and Japanese soldiers in the streets appeared to be in full collaboration and quite good friends.

0707 Lt. Chalk, R.N.V.R., Sub-Lt. Godwin R.N.V.R. (Official Photographer) and two seaman guards left…..for station with 28 cases of stores for Weishien (sic) Camp."

"Monday, 24th September 1945

Arrival of RAPWI postponed for 24 hours owing to the heavy rains up country and consequent dislocation to road and rail transport."

"Tuesday, 25th September 1945

1400 The Captain proceeded to the railway station with S.O.P.A and Captain Erck U.S.N. to witness the arrival of the first 500 RAPWI. Tremendous enthusiasm by all including local Chinese. R.M. Band, sentries and working parties assisted there and at the Hotel. The R.M. Band delighted the large number of internee children. The whole operation went very smoothly.

Enormous crowds were outside the station with flags and banners, and even a Chinese Band. The crowd clapped and yelled with delight when our troops drove through.

1800 The Captain and 19 officers including the Captain and 3 from Tuskan attended an official dinner given by the Mayor and Corporation to welcome the White Ensign back to China."

"Wednesday, 26th September 1945

……Captain R.M. to stay at the Hotel during the next few days to keep in close touch with the returning ex-internees and U.S. authorities.
Later he was besieged by requests from British people wanting preferential treatment and again had to explain that this could not be arranged.

0600. Sailed "Tuskan" with official, service and internee mail for Shanghai in accordance with "Bermuda's" 251820z.

In the ensuing days to 8th October when HMS Bermuda sailed from Tsingtao for Shanghai the transfer of internees from Weihsein continued, interrupted a couple of times by railway damage caused by bandits. Various 'diplomatic' exchanges, included visits to and from the ship including 'Chinese Opera' entertainment ashore for ship's companies.
At the Edgewater Hotel and Mansions increasing numbers of ex-internees arrived to be cared for and two US transport ships began their repatriation.
