MAIN INDEX

Singapore Naval Base and surrounds to recall the days of the Royal Navy.

The home of the Royal Navy in Singapore means different things to different people depending upon what you did and when you were there. This page reflects more of those times. If you can add anything please let me know.

"I have have had much pleasure looking through your website as it has developed.
I am particularly interested in the HMS Terror section as I spent some time there in the 70's
I am an ex RNZN REM and I passed through Terror for the first time in 1969 on HMNZS Blackpool. All was then under RN control and seemed to be so for a long time to come.

I next passed through in 1972 in transit to the UK to join HMNZS Canterbury at the builders yards (Yarrows). We spent a very enjoyable time in the UK especially in Portland! Next visit to Terror was in 1973 when I was posted to the ANZUK Force. Things had changed dramatically and in the two and a bit years I was there they changed even further.
I think the attached photos will give a better idea of the changes. Pre 1971 all Suara staff were RN. The first photo was taken late 1973. As you can see there are a predominance of Australian Army. The next photo taken a year later shows a complete change with the predominant force now RAF. The Navy still managed to get in there though, RN, RNZN(1), & RAN(1) though I believe the last photo was also the last showing a Navy representation. I have seen a photo taken late 1975 where the staff had greatly reduced and all bar 2 were RAF. The balance was 1 RNZAF and the other NZA
I just thought it may give an insight into the later days at Suara up to the final shutdown in 1976"
