HMS JAGUAR
Introduction and Specifications

This new in 1959 RN anti-aircraft frigate escorted HM The Queen, circumnavigated the world and fended off Icelandic ships in the 1970's 'Cod Wars' then served until 2013 the Bangladesh Navy.

The very last warship to come out of Denny's, Dumbarton shipyard HMS JAGUAR was commissioned on the 10th of December 1959 at the mouth of the River Leven on the River Clyde.
She had been launched by HRH Princess Alexandra some two and a half years earlier on the 30th of July 1957 watched then by many anxious shipyard workers at William Denny & Brothers who were beginning to face up to the decline of British shipbuilding.

Present were the Lord Lieutenant, Sir Angus Cunninghame Graham, Provost John J McGregor, Controller of the Navy Vice Admiral Sir Peter Reid, Permanent Secretary to the Board of Admiralty Sir John Lang and many other shipyard, navy and civil representatives and families.

The Royal Navy life of of this frigate, after a shaky start, was to last some 19 years until her sale to the Bangladesh Navy in 1978. Leaving Chatham Dockyard flying the Bangladesh Navy Ensign in August 1978 heralded a new start and, remarkably, a further thirty-five years of naval service for the ship.
That she provided more than half a century of service blows a very large trumpet for her designers and those Clydeside shipbuilders who's working life was, within five years of the ship's acceptance, brought to an end by the closure of Denny's.

Fit to fight HMS JAGUAR left the UK for foreign service on the South Atlantic/South America Station based in South Africa. Subsequent deployments included the Persian Gulf , Indian Ocean and SA/SA again as well as the excitement of a world tour and the rigours of the British/Icelandic ‘Cod Wars’ of the 1970’s as you can see in the year-by-year sections.
